Process - Planning an Exhibition Game Using a SBA Facility

Many rep teams are planning exhibition games. To help these teams, please note the facilities and times that are available via SBA (see note in Directory). Select a facility, date and time and then check in the chart "GAMES" to see if the facility is available or has been taken by another SBA team.  You should also check that your chosen facility will not be cancelled on that day (see note in Directory).

If the facility, date and time are available, then send an email to the Executive Director (Peter Jones):  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   requesting that the facility be booked for an exhibition game. In addition, state the date, time, age group, gender and opposing team. At the same time, referees should be requested.

For example:

At least 1 week in advance, the SBA coach will send a similar email to the one shown below.....

The U14 #1 boys' team is requesting referees for an exhibiton game vs North Bay Fish on April 23, 2010 at 4:30 pm at David and Mary Thomson CI.

Referees will be booked by the Executive Director who is in charge of referees. Each team (SBA and the opposition) is responsible for payment of the referees before the game begins.

Two referees will always be assigned. If only one referee arrives (i.e. snow storm) then that person is paid 1.5 times the alotted amount ($42 X 1.5 = $63....$47 X 1.5 = $70.50)

Fees:

[1] Single game, $47 per referee
[2] Game proceeds or comes after another game: $42 per referee

If game scorers are required, please arrange via email (Wendell Marcial):  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   stating the date, location, time and teams. There will be additional charge for these people: 2 x $12.50.

Portable scoreboards are available from Sam Moncada and/or Peter Jones via email at:  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Please note:

[1] Games are not permitted at the following locations:

[a] Agincourt CI

[b] Jean Vanier CSS

[c] Winston Churchill CI

[2] You may use your practice gym for games unless it is listed above.

[3] All games must start and end according to times published.

[4] In case of weather conditions (snow storm, hurricane, etc.) force the game to be cancelled, the club administrator must be notified by the SBA coach to cancel the referees. Your team may still be billed for referees' expenses if they arrive at the facility.

[5] In cases where the opposition team cancels within two days of the scheduled game or doesn't even show, the club administrator must be notified. Your team will be billed for the total referees' expenses plus it will be fined $5.00.

[6] It is suggested that you don't pay both referees because the opposition says that it will pay when you go to its location. Many times you will be told later that the team can't get a facility or any other excuse. Guess what! Your team just paid the total cost for the game and the opposition walked away with a free game!

Q1 Are there opportunities for team officials to raise money to help pay for NCCP courses, etc.?

Coach Bursaries

The Quest for Gold Enhanced Coaching Program recognizes coaches have out-of-pocket expenses for many things. Coaches who wish to continue their training and education, or increase their knowledge and certification, will benefit from this bursary program.

The Quest for Gold program provides an education bursary for higher levels of professional development and training. Up to 75% of course registration fees will be reimbursed for Ontario resident coaches who pass and complete coursework.

Bursaries can be applied in Q4G eligible sports* that have a coaching course/workshop in any of the following:

[a] NCCP Competition: Introduction Sport-Specific **NEW** starting Nov 1, 2008
[b] NCCP Level 3 Theory (Multi-sport)
[c] NCCP Level 3 Technical (Sport-Specific)
[d] NCCP Competition: Development Multi-sport & Sport-Specific
[e] National Coaching Institute (NCCP Level 4/5)
[f] Enhanced Coaching (Level 3/4/5)

There are different pre-requisites and applications for NCCP courses, the NCI and the Enhanced Coaching. For more information about each of the above programs, go the appropriate section under the Coach Bursary tab on the left menu.

To go directly to the bursary application for NCCP Comp-Intro, Level 3 or Comp-Dev, click: email  - Click Here

A travel subsidy up to a maximum of $200 is available for coaches travelling more than 100km each way to attend NCCP training. Apply for a travel subsidy by using the Travel Subsidy Form.

The total allocation for Coach Bursaries for April 1 2009 to March 31 2010 is $150,000. Your course must fall between these dates to be considered for funding. Applications for courses preceding or following these dates will not be considered. Funding for last year is no longer available.

Q2 What are the procedures for registering my team with SBA and OBA?

Team Registration Information

After you submit your players' and coaches' information (SBA registration forms) and the OBA team roster registration form to the SBA (SBA Executive Director, Peter Jones) and he has entered all the necessary information into the OBA data base, you will receive an email from OBA as follows usually within 2-3 days:

Dear Team Contact,

Thank you for registering with Basketball Ontario’s new online Club Login system. Below you will find your team’s team results and tracking login information. To enter scores of your games you may use the following link to do so: - Click Here

Username – provided by OBA
Password – provided by OBA

The winner of every Basketball Ontario game is required to enter the score of the game so that it appears on both teams' results info. But what I recommend you do is check this site weekly or every couple of weeks to make sure all the scores are being entered correctly. And finally when it comes to the ranking and seeding submission dates, please double check that your scores are accurate and have all been entered.

Steps to enter scores once logged in:

1) Click on “Teams” in the left column to see a listing of the Club’s teams
2) On the Club – Team – List screen select the appropriate team from the list
3) At the Club- Team- Information screen click on [ ADD TEAM RESULTS ]
4) The Club-Team-Results-Form enables input of specific game opponents and scores. Select the “Visiting” team from the drop down selection. The “Home” score will always be the “Team Name” shown at the top of this screen.
5) Click Insert Result to complete the input.

If you have any questions regarding the ranking and seeding process, please feel free to contact me.

Q3 The parents are asking about a tax credit? What should I tell them?

Tax Credits for Player's Parents

Just a reminder that player payments received prior to January 1, 2010 are eligible for a tax credit. In order for the SBA to issue the receipts, the club needs the following information:

[a] players' name;
[b] parent's name; and
[c] the amount of money received in the year (2009)

Please Note:

[1] The maximum amount eligible is $ 325.00 which is the registration fee. Any excess amounts collected by teams are considered to be the equivalent of "fundraising" and are not eligible.

[2] The player(s) must be under the age of 16 at the beginning of the year (2009) thus born in 1993 or later.

Please send the SBA Administator your list by January 31, 2010.

If you have any players that have made payments after December 31, 2009, please prepare a separate list for them and send it to me when you can. I will then issue receipts for the 2010 taxation year. We are less likely to miss anyone if the receipts are issued before the end of the current season.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Regards

Josie (SBA Administrator)

Q4 I heard that part of the player's fee is for a team picture and an individual player's picture. When is "team picture" taking day?

REP Picture's  Schedule

Here is the schedule for taking your Rep Pictures. Please make sure you reserve a time on one of these dates as these are the only three dates available to us. The location for all three dates is at David and Mary Thomson CI. To reserve your time please e-mail Ted Ferreirat at email   This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Q5 My team wants to fund raise? What opportunities are available to SBA players to help them raise money to pay their fees?

Fund Raising Activities

To help offset team and player expenses, the SBA has made possible the following ways for rep players and/or teams to raise money:

[1] Raffle - contact person is Ted Ferriera at email  -  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   Additional information is found in the "Club News" section.

[2] Tournaments - contact person is Wendell Marcial at email  -  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Opportunities are available for scoring of games and concession stands at SBA tournaments.

[3] Gift baskets - contact person is Sam Moncada at email  -  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Great idea for Christmas gifts, rewards, thank you, etc.

[4] Shoot-a-thons - contact person is Ted Ferriera at email  -  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Great idea, especially for the younger teams, to raise money as a team and at the same time have a great deal of fun.

Q6 How much is the player's fee if the player attended the tryouts in September and also did not have to buy a new jersey?

Player's Fee and Uniform

It has been decided that rep players (parents in reality) should be given the choice of buying a new uniform or using last year's uniform if it's still in good shape. Therefore, if a parent wants his/her son/daughter to order a new uniform, $50.00 will be added to the $325.00 player fee.

In summary:

The player's fee is $325.
The player's fee with an uniform is $375.

Q7 What are the procedures for signing a player after the OBA deadline (January 31 or March 31...depending on the age group) and what should be the SBA fee for that player?

Procedures

1. Coach obtains an "Add a Player Form" from either the SBA or the OBA.
2. Coach fills in the club name, team name, his/her name, address, phone number and email address.

Note:

A team may only submit one (1) Add a Player Form with a maximum number of players of two (2) per year.

3. The player must print his/her name and indicate birthday and then sign the Form.
4. Head Coach (not Assistant or Manager) must sign the Form.
5. This Form is then delivered to the SBA Executive Director along with a cheque (made out to Ontario Basketball) or cash of $75.00.
6. The Coach must submit also a letter explaining in full detail why the team needs this player to join the team after the publish deadline.

Note:

[a] Be completely honest as this letter is submitted to a SBA Disciplinary Committee.

Based on the facts presented in the letter, the Committee will determine whether the player may or may not be added to the team's roster.

[b] If the player is granted permission to join the team, OBA will finalize the addition of the player to the team.

The SBA will pay the player's fee ($20.00)

[c] If the player is denied permission to join the team, OBA will not finalize the addition of the player to the team.
[d] Regardless of whether the player is permitted to join or not join, the $75.00 is not returned.

Some reasons that the Committee will look for....

i. a team needs the player(s) to fulfill the minimum number required to play at the Provincials.
ii. a team has lost 3 or 4 players to injuries (that can be supported by medical reports) and, therefore, will not have the minimum number players for the Provincials.

Rationale for this procedures....

In the past some teams waited until the Ranking and Seeding Committee had come out with its Final Ranking to add stronger players. This meant that the teams were playing against "weaker" teams in their divisions to simply win a medal.

The SBA Registration fee for players is $325.00 regardless of when they join. What the team decides to do in regards to the additional charges that the team has charged its players (i.e. for its tournaments, etc) is up to it.

OBA does not have special rates for a team that joins early or late in the season. SBA has to cover its costs the same as OBA. The insurance rates, uniform costs, facilities fees do not change, etc.

Once again, the fee is $325.00 with the following situation: the player's fee with an uniform is $375.00
