Tournament Format

[1] Each team is guaranteed three (3) games which will be played against the teams in its pool.

Playoffs

[1] Six Team Division (2 Pools)

a. After the teams have played the two teams in their pool, these teams will be seeded 1 to 3.
b. First place team will crossover to the other pool and play the second place team.
c. Winners will advance to the Championship Game.
d. The third place teams will play each other which will equal their third game.

    (i) Neither of these teams will advance to the playoffs.

[2] Eight Team Division (2 Pools)

a. After the teams have played the three teams in their pool, these teams will be seeded 1 to 4.
b. The top two teams from each pool will crossover and play in the playoffs.

    (i) The other two teams in each pool do not advance to the playoffs.

c. Winners ('b') advance to the Championship Game.

[3] Ten Team Division (3 Pools)

a. After the teams have played the other teams in their pool:

    (i) In the four team pool, the first and second place teams advance to the playoffs.
    (ii) In the three team pools, the first place teams will crossover and play the second place teams.
    (iii) The winners of these two games advance to the playoffs.

b. These four teams will be seeded 1 to 4 using the tie-breaking system to determine the playoff matchups.

c. The two third place teams will play each other.  Result does not affect the playoff structure.

[4] Twelve Team Division (4 Pools)

a. After the teams have played the two teams in their pool, these teams will be seeded 1 to 3.
b. The third placed teams will play each other but will not advance to the playoffs.
c. The first and second place teams will advance to the playoffs where they will crossover to play teams from different pools.
d. Winners of the quarter finals will advance to the semi-finals.

(i) These teams will be seeded 1 to 4 based on the tie-breaking system.

e. Winners of the semi-finals will advance to the Championship Game.

(i) The losing teams do not advance to the playoffs.

[5] Sixteen Team Division (4 Pools)

a. After the teams have played the three teams in their pool, these teams will be seeded 1 to 4.
b. The first and second place teams will advance to the playoffs where they will crossover to play teams from different pools.
c. Winners of the quarter finals will advance to the semi-finals.

(i) These teams will be seeded 1 to 4 based on the tie-breaking system.

d. Winners of the semi-finals will advance to the Championship Game.

(i) The losing teams do not advance to the playoffs.

Seeding and Tie Breaking System

[1] For Seeding:

a. Won/Loss record
b. Point differential (points scored / points scored against --- 20 point cap per game)
c. Total points allowed

Within Pools

a. Won / Loss record will be the primary determining factor in seeding.

    (i) If two teams are tied with the same record, the head-to-head winner will be seeded higher.
    (ii) If more than two teams are tied, the tie breaker will be total point differential (see above) in games involving the teams that are tied.

b. If two teams remain tied, head-to-head will be used.
c. If there is still a tie or there is a three team tie, a number draw will be used

Games

[1a] All club rep games will follow Ontario Basketball and FIBA rules and regulations.
[1b] All school games will follow High School Federation rules and regulations.
[2] All games will be officiated by TABO certified referees.

Schedule

[1] See schedule published on web site.

[2] Teams should arrive at their game site at least 30 minutes before the time listed on the schedule. Whenever possible games will begin before the times listed. Although the length of the pregame warm-ups will depend on the length of the preceding game, there will be a minimum of 5 minutes to a maximum of 8 minutes. Teams may take the court only after both teams from the preceding game have cleared the court area.

Change Rooms

[1] Change rooms will be provided for each team.
[2] Team players are encouraged to take their belongings to their bench since other teams will have access to the same locker rooms.
[3] Teams preparing for the next game will be permitted to access their locker room only after the second halve of the game preceeding their game has begun.

Uniforms

[1] Teams should bring two sets of uniforms.
[2] The first team listed on the schedule is the "HOME" team.
[3] The Home Team must wear its home jerseys.

a. In Playoffs, the higher seeded team will be classified as the Home Team.
b. In the Championship Game the Tournament Convenor and the two head coaches will determine who is the Home Team.

Equipment

[1] Each team should bring its basketballs for warm ups, etc.

a. One of the teams will provide the game ball.

[2] Each team should bring its first aid equipment.

Team Rosters

[1] Head Coaches are asked to submit their team rosters to the Tournament Convenor.
[2] Rosters must include:

a. names of the players and their jersey numbers

(i) please list both numbers if players have different numbers on their Home and Away jerseys

b. names of the coaches
c. names of the assistant coaches/manager

Spectators

[1] Spectators are welcome at all tournament games.
[2] Spectators are expected to be acquainted with and follow the Ontario Basketball Fair Play Guidelines (see article re: Guidelines) with regards to being respectful to all players, coaches, teams, game officials and spectators.

Admission Fee (School Tournaments)

An admission fee of $4.00 per day for adults and $2.00 per day for students (with proof of school identification card) will be charged prior to entering the tournament venue.

Spectators bringing a food donation will receive a discount of $1.00 off their admission fee (i.e. Adults become $3.00 and students become $1.00)

Ontario Basketball Fair Play

Fair Play Policy Statement

Welcome to an OBA FAIR PLAY facility

Enjoy the basketball game(s) and the competition.
Cheer as much and as loud as you want.

Please be aware that verbal or physical abuse of fellow players, spectators, coaches or officials will not be tolerated!

Everyone here wants to have fun and enjoy themselves. Do not take the fun out of sports for others.

If you disregard OBA’s FAIR PLAY POLICY, you will be asked to leave the facility.

Club team representatives will be responsible for maintaining the proper decorum for their teams. In the event of any OBA disciplinary proceeding, the team representative for the concerned team will be responsible to represent the team to the Chair of Fair Play for Ontario Basketball.

Coaches’ Behavioural Guidelines

Definition

It is a requirement for all coaches participating in a SBA sanctioned tournament to assume responsibility for their own conduct as well as that of all athletes, coaches and spectators under their jurisdiction.

Application

Violation of the OBA Guidelines for Behaviour of Coaches will be dealt with in accordance with the Ontario’s Basketball Discipline Policies.

Actions

Coaches should always model mature behaviour consistent with the goals of the Ontario’s Basketball Guidelines for Behaviour:

a) Be a leader, a positive influence and a role model.
b) Reward effort, fair play and commitment.
c) Recognize and respect the differences in your athletes.
d) Demonstrate respect for all individuals involved in the game.
e) Always consider the physical and emotional well being of the athletes.
f) Communicate in a positive and rational manner.
g) Respect and coach within the spirit of the game.
h) Always attempt to contribute to the betterment of the game.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in disciplinary action in accordance with established Ontario’s Basketball Discipline Policies.

Athlete’s Behavioural Guidelines

Definition

Anyone who participates in an athletic activity is considered an athlete. It is expected that each athlete will compete to the best of his or her abilities at all times, keeping in mind the spirit of competition and of the game.

Goal Statement

Anyone participating in a SBA sanctioned tournament will be expected to adhere to the following Guidelines for Behaviour supporting Basketball Ontario’s Fair Play Policy:

Actions

Always model mature behaviour consistent with that of Ontario’s Basketball Guidelines for Behaviour:

a) FAIR PLAY is an athlete's first priority.
b) Participate for the love and enjoyment of the game.
c) Respect the efforts and accomplishments of your teammates and your opponents.
d) Respect officials, coaches, spectators and event organizers.
e) Respect the facility you visit or in which you play.
f) Respect the rules of the game.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in disciplinary action in accordance with established Ontario’s Basketball Discipline Policies.

Parents’ and Spectators' Behavioural Guidelines

Definition

All parents, legal guardians and other spectators are responsible for proper conduct (their own and that of their guests) while attending or participating in all tournaments no matter the role they have in the event.

Goal Statement

Anyone participating in the Scarborough Basketball Association sanctioned events will be expected to adhere to the following Guidelines for Behavior supporting Ontario’s Basketball Fair Play Policy.

Actions

Parents/Legal guardians should always model mature behaviour consistent with the goals of the Ontario’s Basketball Guidelines for Behaviour supporting Ontario’s Basketball Fair Play Policy:

a) Remember that your son/daughter participates in basketball for his/her enjoyment, not your own.
b) Encourage him/her to participate, do not force him/her.
c) Focus on his/her effort and performance rather winning or losing.
d) Never ridicule or yell at your son/daughter or any other youth player for making a mistake or losing a competition.
e) Encourage your son/daughter to play according to the rules of the event.
f) Appreciate good performances and skillful plays by your son/daughter and all the other participants.
g) Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sporting activities.
h) Respect the officials’ decisions and teach your son/daughter to do likewise.
i) Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young participant.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in removal from the gym facility and/or disciplinary action in accordance with established OBA Disciplinary Policies.
