About Us

Club Vision

To create opportunities across Scarborough for all children and youth aged 4 - 19 to:

• Participate in basketball,
• Learn and play basketball, using qualified coaching and programming,
• Learn to compete in a supportive and development-focused environment,
• Improve the "health of the community" and to "develop the Game".

With each program, participants will have an opportunity to learn both basketball lessons and drills dedicated to conditioning and skill development as well as recreational play and life skills.

Philosophy and Aims of the SBA

Formed in 1996 as a non-profit organization, the SBA has a simple game plan – to provide youth in and around the Scarborough area with the opportunity to grow and enjoy life through the sport of basketball.

For some of our youth, the SBA will be a launching pad for a successful basketball career in college or university. Some may even go on to become professional players, based on the fundamentals that we helped them develop. However, for most, the SBA and its basketball programs are simply a means of building character, developing friendships and having a whole lot of fun.

The philosophy and commitment to the youth is simple:

• train and teach basketball fundamentals to all age levels
• emphasize the importance of teamwork for all participants
• practice the ideas of health, discipline, hard work and dedication
• teach acceptable social behaviors in sport
• give at risk or disadvantaged youth the opportunity to participate in the program
• provide an affordable REP program
• keep the welfare of the player first and free of undue pressure from coaches or parents

The Scarborough Basketball Association is a registered non-profit organization, run and coached by unpaid volunteers. We believe in putting athletes first and winning second. Over the past 10+ years of existence, we have placed Scarborough on the basketball map in Ontario, by producing great basketball players and organizing completive tournaments.

The SBA develops players via outstanding house league programs beginning with players as young as five all the way up to nineteen year olds. In addition, it organizes rep teams for both boys and girls in all divisions ranging from U10 (Novice) to U19 (Junior). Our season starts with the Rep Academy in September and is completed at Basketball Ontario Provincial Finals in April and/or May. We offer at each level (AAA, AA, A), highly completive sanctioned tournaments for boys and girls in Scarborough with teams participating from around Ontario and the United States.

The SBA is affiliated with Basketball Ontario and therefore supports the Fair Play Policies that it has set forth. These can be view at www.basketball.on.ca. Our coaches are dedicated to the development of our player’s skill level as outlined in the series of publications (LTAD - Long Term Athlete Development) from Canada Basketball. This is accomplished through the use of our ‘Team Development Policy’ and improving their own knowledge of basketball by obtaining NCCP levels. We have invested in programs such as the ‘Elite Camp’ to improve on the fundamental skills of basketball for each athlete.

Scarborough Basketball Association is continuing to give back to the community by the improvement of their gyms. In partnership with the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic Separate School Board, we have help fund the purchases of scoreboards, protective mats and refinishing of gym floors of quality gyms in David and Mary Thomson CI and Pope John Paul II CSS schools. Not only do our athletes benefit from the use of these gyms, but, so do the students that attend these schools.
